About Coins

COINS

Currently, small-denomination and circulation coins are in circulation in Ukraine.

Small-denomination coins

One kopiika is the 100th part of the monetary unit of Ukraine, the hryvnia.

The 10- and 50-kopiika coins are the circulation coins used in Ukraine today.

On 1 October 2025, the NBU started to gradually withdraw 10-kopiika coins from circulation. They are still legal tender.

Small-denomination 1-, 2, 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-kopiika coins were put into circulation on 2 September 1996. The NBU withdrew from circulation:

  • 1-, 2-, and 5-kopiika coins on 1 October 2019 and
  • 25-kopiika coins on 1 October 2020.

Circulation coins

At present, 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-hryvnia coins are circulating in Ukraine.

1-hryvnia circulation coins (golden in color) were issued into circulation on 12 March 1997. These coins (including commemorative coins of standard quality) minted before 2018 started to be gradually withdrawn from circulation from 1 October 2020.

The NBU issued into circulation the following new circulation coins (silver in color):

  • 1- and 2-hryvnia coins on 27 April 2018
  • 5-hryvnia coins on 20 December 2019
  • 10-hryvnia coins on 3 June 2020.

These coins are in circulation alongside 1-hryvnia coins (including commemorative coins of standard quality) minted before 2018, and 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-hryvnia banknotes of the 2003–2007 designs, which are gradually being withdrawn from circulation.
