NBU Issues Commemorative Coin to Celebrate Ukraine’s Outstanding Artist and Fashion Designer Lyubov Panchenko

On World Art Day, 15 April 2025, the Ukrainian House National Center hosted a presentation of a new commemorative coin entitled "The World of the Couturier’s Art. Lyubov Panchenko." This coin celebrates a multifaceted figure, the soul of Ukrainian art, outstanding fashion designer, and 1960s artist Lyubov Panchenko.

The new coin was presented by NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy and Kateryna Borovyk, Deputy Director General for Research and Exhibition at the Kyiv City History Museum, to whose branch (the Museum of the Sixties) the artist donated her entire artistic legacy during her lifetime.

The presentation was part of a meeting with artists organized by the Ukrainian House. The event was attended by Director of the Ukrainian House National Center Olha Viieru and Ukrainian artists whose works are presented at the exhibition called "The Hryvnia. More than Money." Among the artists were Dasha Podoltseva, Teresa Barabash, Olha Kuziura, and Roman Chiz.

"I’m honored to present our new commemorative coin dedicated to Lyubov Panchenko, a famous Ukrainian artist whose name has become synonymous with creative freedom," said NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy. "A person who, without exaggeration, participated in the creation of a new Ukrainian culture, boldly asserting her right to national identity. This coin, as well as Lyubov Panchenko’s artworks, will forever preserve her extraordinary personality and Ukrainian flavor. It embodies the indestructibility of Ukrainian culture, honors the devotion to national traditions and the artist’s invaluable contribution to the development of Ukrainian art."

Kateryna Borovyk said that the Kyiv History Museum will until 1 June host a retrospective exhibition entitled "The World of Love" dedicated to the brilliant Ukrainian artist Lyubov Panchenko. "The team of the museum is proud that during her lifetime, the original and freedom-loving Lyubov Panchenko bequeathed her entire creative legacy to our cultural institution," Borovyk said. “We are proud to have the rights to all the transferred works. And we are proud to have the opportunity not only to preserve Panchenko’s works, but also to popularize her immense talent in various formats. With our participation, the album "Lyubov Panchenko: Return" was published, her works were presented at exhibitions abroad, and her life and work became an inspiration for many contemporary artists. This year, at the initiative of Diana Popova, Director General of the Kyiv History Museum, we prepared the artist's first retrospective exhibition, Universe of Love, using modern technologies, recreating the era, and featuring a large number of memorabilia. Unfortunately, this was the last major exhibition project for Diana Popova. She, like Lyubov Panchenko, passed away in the blooming April sunshine three years apart. Both strong women always ‘danced only to their own tune,’ and we are honored and proud to continue their work."

Coin Design

This coin has a value of 10 hryvnias. It is made of silver (Ag 925) in special uncirculated quality. It has a fine weight of 31.1 g, and a diameter of 38.6 mm. The edge of the coin is smooth with incised inscriptions indicating the metal, its fineness, and the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.

Obverse: there is a stylized portrait of Lyubov Panchenko, framed by elements of her famous work "Bucha Spring". Her gaze, full of creative energy and freedom, seems to penetrate through time and space, symbolizing strength and devotion to her ideals. This composition emphasizes the artist’s close connection with her homeland. To the left of the portrait are Ukraine’s small coat of arms and the legend ЛЮБОВ ПАНЧЕНКО (Lyubov Panchenko); to the right of the portrait are the coin’s issue year 2025, the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the coin’s face value 10, and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia ₴.

Reverse: there is a fragment of Panchenko’s work "Bucha Spring" (decorative element – pad printing), which is symbolically combined with the artist’s portrait, creating a holistic composition. “Bucha Spring” is not just a painting, it is a kind of manifesto of beauty and indomitable spirit, because it was in Bucha that the artist was born and lived. This image is forever imprinted in the memory of the city and in the hearts of admirers of the artist’s talent, becoming a symbol of faith in revival.
