About Banknotes

The NBU issues banknotes and coins that have a modern design and reliable security features. The central bank monitors its banknotes throughout their lifecycle, which includes their design, production and circulation.

The hryvnia – Ukraine’s official currency, and the kopiika, one hundredth of a hryvnia, were issued into circulation during the currency reform carried out between 2 and 16 September 1996.

The currency’s letter code is UAH, with 980 being its numerical code, the short form of its name in Ukrainian is “грн” and ₴ is its graphic symbol.

Issuer: National Bank of Ukraine.

During the existence of the hryvnia, four generations of banknotes, which differed in design and security features, have been in circulation.

Currently, fourth-generation (the most modern) and third-generation (gradually being withdrawn) banknotes are in circulation. First and second generation banknotes (issued before 2003) are no longer legal tender.

The following banknotes are being gradually withdrawn from circulation:

1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, 100, and 200-hryvnia banknotes designed between 2003 and 2007 (third generation banknotes) are being gradually withdrawn from circulation and replaced with more modern fourth generation banknotes that have more advanced security features, as well as with circulation coins.

These banknotes remain legal tender, so there is no need to specifically exchange them for other types of money.

At the same time, they are no longer being added to circulation and are not issued from bank cash desks, including:

1- and 2-hryvnia banknotes from 1 October 2020

5-, 10-, 20- and 100-hryvnia banknotes from 1 January 2023

50- and 200-hryvnia banknotes from 1 November 2024 and

500-hryvnia banknotes from 1 August 2024.

The following banknotes have been withdrawn from circulation:

On 1 October 2020, 1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, 100-, and 200-hryvnia banknotes designed before 2003 (of all years of issue) ceased to be legal tender.

They can be exchanged for legal tender banknotes and coins at the National Bank of Ukraine and at authorized banks until the end of the martial law in Ukraine, and for another three months (90 days) after its termination or cancellation.
